The first Model OSCE Serbia was held on 2nd and 3rd March 2009 at Palace of Serbia in Belgrade. About 80 university students from throughout Serbia played the roles of the OSCE participating States delegations, OSCE officials and NGOs that were relevant to the environmental topics discussed.
During the last four months, students have been preparing for the Final Simulation, exploring their roles and negotiating with other participants, trying to find resolutions for the two mock scenarios.
At the Final Simulation, which was a two-day event, students participated in a simulation of a session of the OSCE Permanent Council, a weekly meeting during which ambassadors from the 56 participating States discuss developments and make decisions.
The first day was entirely dedicated to the mock scenario regarding energy security and the second day to the mock scenario regarding flood control at the River Rhine. On both days, Preparatory Committee meetings were held in the morning and in the afternoon the simulation of a session of the OSCE Permanent Council took place. On both simulation days consensus was reached.
After the simulations of the OSCE Permanent Council, special guests from Embassies of Germany, Netherlands and Ukraine shared their views on diplomacy and talked about their experience in international relations. Students also took the opportunity to post questions on various topics from the field of diplomacy and international relations.
The Model OSCE Serbia 2009, organized by the OSCE Mission to Serbia and the Zikic Foundation, and supported by the Serbian Ministry for Youth and Sports, featured opening and closing speeches by representatives of several Serbian ministries as well.
At the closing reception, representatives of the OSCE Mission to Serbia and the Zikic Foundation awarded the certificates to the students.
Since the Model OSCE Serbia 2009 was such a success, we hope that this will become a traditional event.
